Thrifted and Ripped

Thrifting is one of my favorite things to do especially when my wallet isn’t at it’s greatest. Houston has a lot of thrift stores but the one I enjoy going to is good old Good Will. ( Read more about my thrifting experience and tips in the next article).

The key to finding the best pair of high waisted mom jeans is all in the length of the crotch. You want to look for a pair of jeans that is straight legged, no skinny and no slim fit. You can even opt  for flare jeans and hem the bottoms. Once you find a pair of jeans with the pant style you like, look at the zipper area and make sure the length is long. Small zippers tend to be low rise jeans. The quality is important as well, usually thicker material tend to be more authentic jeans.

There are many ways that you can spice up a pair of thrifted jeans. You can create rips and holes around the knees and above. You can also create flared ruffles at the bottom of each leg. To create the rips cut a slit or two and use a tweezer to pick out the blue fuzz and also bring the white strings out. Cut one or two slit at a time to be able to better gage the holes. I would recommend turning the jeans inside out when tweezing to see the white strings.

To create the flared ruffles, cut of a length from the bottom and pick out the white/blue fuzz. At the end, throw your jeans in the washer and let the magic happen. If it doesn’t look super nice at first let the washer do it’s job and it should turn out 10x better!

You can also add patches to your jeans and even cut them into shorts! If you want to lighten the denim color brush some bleach over it but be cautious cause too much can make it white/yellow.  In the past I’ve even added on studs along the pocket seams.

To all my petite ladies, boy jeans are the best and they’re less than $5 cause they’re children clothes.

Turning it inside out lets you see the lines better!
